Welcome to The Unshaken Leader: An Introduction
The hardest leadership challenge you'll ever face starts here.
Hey Unshaken Leaders! If you're reading this, you've likely discovered something I spent 30+ years learning the hard way: the most complex leadership challenge isn't managing others, it's learning to lead yourself, primarily when life tests you at levels you never expected.
I'm Corey, and I've built this space for leaders who understand that true strength doesn't come from avoiding storms but from finding your center within them. This is "The Unshaken Leader". I want to tell you exactly what we're building together.
Why I'm Here (And Why You Might Be Too)
Picture this: You've spent decades leading others, whether in boardrooms, battlefields, hospital corridors, or wherever your expertise is needed. You've developed skills, earned respect, and made tough decisions. But somewhere along the way, you realized that external leadership experience didn't automatically translate to leading the most important person in your life: yourself.
You may be navigating a significant transition. You may have faced moments when you had to choose between what's safe and right. Perhaps you're carrying wounds that nobody sees, while still showing up to lead others daily. Or maybe you've reached the point where external success isn't enough anymore, you want something more authentic, more grounded.
That's precisely where I found myself. After 30+ years in military and corporate leadership, having commanded troops in combat and managed complex organizations, I discovered that my greatest leadership challenge was learning to lead myself through the internal battles that no rank or title could have prepared me for.
What "Unshaken" Really Means
I've learned that being "unshaken" isn't about being unaffected by difficulty. It's about developing what I call "inner stillness, outer strength", the ability to remain centered when everything else is shifting around you.
Think about the leaders who've truly inspired you. I bet they weren't the ones who never faced challenges. They were the ones who remained grounded in their true selves, regardless of external pressure. They found a way to transform their struggles into wisdom, their pressure into purpose.
That's what we're exploring here: how to become leaders who aren't just resilient but genuinely unshaken from within.
The Journey We're Taking Together
Over the coming weeks and months, we'll dive deep into five areas that shape this journey:
The Inner Leader: The shift from external command to internal mastery, and why self-leadership is the foundation of all authentic leadership.
Trauma & Resilience: How to transform our wounds into wisdom, moving beyond surviving our challenges to growing through them.
Organizational Integrity: What it means to lead with principle when systems around us prioritize expedience, and how to build cultures rooted in authentic values.
The Hero's Journey: The universal pattern of transformation everyone faces, from the call to adventure through the descent into darkness and eventual return with hard-won wisdom.
Wholeness & Connection: How to show up authentically in a world that often rewards performance over presence and build genuine relationships while carrying our struggles.
Who This Is For
This isn't just for veterans, though they'll recognize the terrain. It's for anyone who's ever had to lead while wounded, make decisions under pressure, or choose principle over convenience. Healthcare workers are burned out from the pandemic. Corporate executives facing ethical dilemmas. Parents trying to model resilience. Activists sustaining long fights for justice. Entrepreneurs build something meaningful after failure.
What unites us isn't our specific background; it’s our shared understanding that authentic leadership requires doing the inner work first.
Where We're Headed
I'm building something here that goes beyond just a newsletter. This is the foundation for a community, a movement toward more authentic leadership that starts from the inside out.
I'm already seeing opportunities to expand this conversation through workshops that help teams build "unshaken" cultures, speaking engagements that bring these principles to organizations hungry for authentic leadership, and, eventually, ways for all of us to connect more directly and support each other on this journey.
But it starts with stories, frameworks, and honest conversations about what it takes to lead yourself when everything else feels unstable.
Your Invitation
You'll receive insights that blend hard-won experience with practical frameworks every week. Stories that acknowledge the real cost of principled leadership while pointing toward the profound rewards of living from your center. And gradually, we'll build a community of leaders who understand that being unshaken isn't about perfection, but authenticity forged through fire.
Whether you're a free subscriber joining the journey or a paid subscriber helping to build this vision, you're not just reading content. You're becoming part of something larger, a gathering of leaders committed to redefining what strength looks like in our world.
Together, we're not just surviving the storms of leadership. We're learning to find our center within them.
Welcome to The Unshaken Leader. I'm honored you're here.
Ready to begin this journey together? My first official newsletter, "The Illusion and The Reality," will be released this Friday. It's the story of discovering that my life's most crucial leadership assignment was learning to lead myself, and what would happen if we stopped performing long enough to tell the truth about who we really are.
Bravo Zulu, Corey!!
I have had really good luck with mindfulness and stoicism (the daily stoic) to recenter myself. I am excited here things through your lense.
